So I have the chance to buy either a Marshall 1936 2x12 or a Orange PPC112 1x12 to match my incoming Blackstar HT-5 head.
The Marshall has Celestions GT12-75 in it and the Orange has a Celestion Vintage 30. Both have closed back.
I've done my research on both speakers, read many opinions...
Very roughly, Vintage 30 are well known for their noticable mid-range and the GT12-75 for being kind of "scooped"... But you may already know that.
Personally, i'm not really a fan of mid-range. I like to have a slightly scooped tone, but nothing drastic. Wich one of the cab you think would work best? Is the difference so subtle that I won't even hear the difference? Does dialing out the midrange on the amp attenuate the mid-range spike from the V30's enough? (and contrary with the GT12-75, will bringing the mid up to compensate the "scooped" sound do the job?).
I can't really test them and i'm not that knowledgeable in the speakers departement.
If you don't like the midrange spike, you're not gonna like the V30s. Pretty much end of story, sadly... it's very hard to dial that out as that's their dominant characteristic.
Great for Marshall-y crunch and snarl, but they don't really do 'scooped' all that well in my opinion.
