I've been looking for Tube Screamers to replace my modded DOD YJM308, since I need something with a status LED, and I came across one on CL for $25 w/ power supply earlier this week. I emailed the guy, and he called me back later that day, and said I could come pick it up on Sunday (today).
This morning, I woke up to find an email from him (and then got a call a little while later to the same effect), saying that he couldn't get it to work with the 9V adaptor, and another one he had wouldn't work, either...and also that the pedal doesn't take a battery (ummm...pretty sure it can), but that if I still feel like coming up, he'll let me take it for $10 in "unknown" condition.
I figure it's probably something really simple at the most, like maybe a fried component or something...but I also figured that if he didn't know it wouldn't take a battery, maybe he was doing something wrong. So I grabbed a known good battery and a guitar cable, got in the car, and drove up to his place. When I got there, he pretty much reiterated what he'd told me earlier...said he didn't know anything about it, and figured a 9V adaptor was a 9V adaptor...and that it wouldn't accomodate a battery. I told him that I was planning to modify it anyway, so no big deal...I could probably fix it myself.
So I handed him the cash and walked back to the car, hit the big black button that gives access to the battery (), pop in the good one, plug in the cable, and hit the switch...and to my complete lack of surprise, the LED lights up!
So, I stopped at Radio Shack on the way home, and spent some of the cash I saved on the parts I needed for the 808 mod, plus a new solder tip and a desoldering braid, and then came home and spent a little under an hour doing that mod, plus putting in a blue LED from the big pile of them I have left from the cosmetic mod I did on my old Ultra Plus...and ended up with a blue LED-equipped TS808-spec pedal for under $20 total
