I've been looking for new ways to diversify one of my cover bands. Last week, I began looking for a keyboard, but then I thought about getting a Roland GR-20 Guitar Synth.
Does anyone here use one?
And if so, how well does it work for you in a live application?
Will it allow you to save presets, or do you have to change it manually on the pedal itself?
My advice would be to find a used GR-33. I had one and used it live all the time. From what I gather, the GR-20 is not editable(or at least very much). The GR-33 has tons of options and is extremely editable and you can usually find them used for less than a new GR-20. And I'm not sure if it's MIDI capable. The GR-33 is.
As for live, it's pretty cool. If you remember my old Mechanistic stuff, most all of the background indusrital/techno sounding stuff was with the GR-33. Granted, there's not a ton of it in there but that's what I used it for. I also used it in my other band back then for a horn section and things like that. I never used it for a direct replacement for a keyboard but all the instruments in it are very realistic sounding. I used it more for accompanying lines for the guitar. I could go on and on about it. I think you'd have a blast with one.
And a lot of people will complain about the tracking but actually, you get use to it after a while and kind of adjust your playing to compensate.
Also, Shannon, get a hold of Hodgy. He uses a GR-20 and he may be able to give you more info about that unit.
