Since I'm moving into an apartment building, I need to seriously downsize my rig (currently a Mesa Triple Rec. with Mesa 4x12). The problem is that I've grown used to having, in my ears, high quality tone, and I'm not prepared to just grab whatever practice amp comes along.
Currently, my only thought is an Axe-FX, but I probably could only afford an Ultra with no power amp or speaker cabinet from the sale of my half stack, and I'm not sure a standard Axe would be wholly sufficient. Beyond that, I'm scared as hell about losing my beloved tubes.
So, what are my other viable options at this point? Bonus points if the amp can do low-gain, as well, either through amp controls or rolling back the guitar volume knob.
Think I'll crosspost this to SS.org, just for the sake of breadth.
Edit: I've checked out the Blackstar HT5. I'd have to try it out in person, but it doesn't appear to have the raw RAGE that the Rectifier does. Oh boy, this is going to be a painful transition for me.
Do you need an amp at all for gigging? Could you just use the AxeFX with a good set of headphones or studio monitors?
