I've got to get my hands on my own power amp for my backup rig. At the moment I have an engl E530. My band mate has a 1U soild state rack power amp that I use sometimes to play through but he's been using it more now so I want to pick up my own. I know there are a few tube power amps but most are pretty expensive and hard to find here and it's not what I'm looking for really. I have a Laney head that I put my pre-amp through for gigging as my main rig and I'm happy with it. I just need a decent back up amp in case the laney breaks.
I've seen a few low power PA power amps for sale. I can pick up a new one from Thomann for €100-150. They are stereo solid state 2U rack power amps. Does anyone use these for guitar? I'm going to try out my power amp thats on our PA but I figured some people are doing this already. What are the results like?
i used a mackie for a while and loved it. the fr800 i believe, it was only about $200 and change. It was very simple, always worked, and i abused that fucker too. but if you go that route, i'd reccomend the fr1400 for a little more. the 800 puts out plenty of juice, but i like going with overkill in SS. Its not like tubes where the harder you run them the more the sound changes, so i would assume its better to buy a bigger SS amp and run the amp lower and be easy on it instead of having it cranked all the time
