Default Kit amps

Anyone ever build an amp from a kit? I'm thinking about snagging a JCM800 kit from either Ceriatone or Weber (probably Weber since shipping from the US will be cheaper than Malaysia) and modding the fuck out of it. I'll probably grab one of the smaller AX84 amp kits first just to start off since I've never built an amp before, then move up the the JCM800. I downloaded a theory document from AX84 about amp theory, and pretty much all of it is over my head, but I'm confident that I could solder one together and read schematics, and most mods are pretty well documented, ie change this resister to a higher for more gain, etc.

Also, if you're interested in something a little more 'vintage', (and I only mean 'somewhat' more vintage as I've played one of these and boosted you could do some badass metal tones) MetroAmp makes a JTM45 kit for under a grand:

A completely subjective discussion of semantics? Awesome!

Weber makes it for under $500.

Them both being clones, it's hard to say which one would be higher quality. Weber is a fairly well known company though.

You can always improve the quality with better parts here and there, anyways.

I think most of the quality of it would be in how you build it and route cables and shit anyways.

That probably adds a lot as well. You don't want anything inducting anything that isn't supposed to be

With the MetroAmp, you shouldn't go wrong parts-wise, and you can upgrade to Mercury Magnetics transformers and some really high-end caps for a small upcharge. You get what you pay for. But, it's also a slightly different texture than a JCM800.

Weber's components are rather shite, I'd advise you to stay away.

You may want to also consider a Canadian alternative, Trinity Amps

I heard one of their Marshall 18-watt clones and it was amazing.
