Just got my Audix i5 mic in the mail today to try out with my new Grendel Dead Room iso cab, which has a V30 speaker. I should publicly thank xtrustisyoursx from ss.org, who suggested I try the i5.
Holy crap, the improvement is huge. It's like removing a blanket off the sound. Both more highs, and a much smoother overall sound. I was able to move the i5 much further off-center than the SM57, and thereby get a much deeper sound. The improved clarity also allowed me to use more gain in the same patch I recorded my "Legato Funk" clip with last night.
I recorded a new version of Legato Funk using the i5 and the same legato Axe-FX patch, but a bit more preamp gain, and the lows and highs turned down, and the mids turned up. I probably overdid it a little on either turning down the highs, or I might need to move the i5 very slightly closer to the center of the speaker, but I think the improvement is still huge. This is the first Dead Room clip I've recorded with the Axe-FX amp sims that I've been happy with.
You can hear them both at Music page of Council of One - MP3 music page on SoundClick
thats a really impressive difference ill have to see about getting one for when i record. Do you think it would work ok for live use?
