I love the Blaze bridge - it's still probably my favorite bridge pickup I've ever played, there's this awesome midrange harmonic haze on the decay that just makes me really happy whenever I play it.
Partly because I love that sound so much, I almost never solo on the neck pickup on my UV. It's funny, because normally I prefer neck pickup tones for soloing, but I'm just really kind of underwhelmed by the Blaze in the neck. A/B'ing it with my strat is really what I think does it for me - the strat has this awesome attack to it, and is very clear and bell like. I obviously don't expect anything I put in the UV to sound like a neck singlecoil, but I think I'd like something a little clearer, crisper, and brighter.
The Blaze, to me, sounds a little dark and wooly, and overly smooth. I want something with a little more sparkle and cut to it, that has more of a single-coil like sensitivity to picking attack. Brighter, airier, less compressed, more open. Output also isn't a concern - I've got them pretty far back as they are, and generally seem to like lower output pickups (and, additionally, I seem to prefer the response of the Roadster with a lower output signal hitting the preamp - I recently lowered my pickups quite a bit, and really liked what it did to my tone).
On the flipside of course, it's also this beat-up old UV with aged, naturally discolored white pickups that have turned sort of an off-white/light cream with time, and I don't want to throw a vibrantly white new humbucker in the neck either. So i might just live with it, but it's certainly worth discussing for the next seven I buy.
As an added thought - I still have a set of Alnico (Alnico 5, I think?) magnets left over from the order over at ss.org from a couple years ago - I got them right before my Nomad blew a fuse, so I never got around to putting them in since I wouldn't be able to do a good A/B comparison. Would swapping the ceramic magnet from my current pickup nudge the pickup in the direction I'm looking for?
Why not have the pickup rewound? BKP will do it, as I'm sure plenty of other companies will. Get it wound for exactly what you want, and you'll keep the look you want.
