I'm a total and utter amp n00b, so I thought that I'd ask for help regarding a purchase that I'm planning. I'm tiring of my Pod XT, so I'd like to upgrade to the real thing.
I'm seeking something versatile; I'm a metalhead who loves ballsy, mid-heavy tones, but I like glassy and jazzy clean tones too.
I'm going to go to university later in the year, so I don't want anything so loud that it will make me hated in my halls of residence.
The upper end of my budget is around 450GBP, though I could possibly stretch this if needbe.
Lyle (I'm his guitarist) has already suggested that I plump for a Blackstar HT5 combo or small head/cab. Does anyone have any experience with these?
I've also heard good things about Orange gear; is it worth a look?
Any help would be great.
Blackstar stuff is made of pure WIN. Seriously. Especially for the price you pay.
Orange is great also, but nothing that's not loud IIRC. The Orange Tiny Terror will go as low as 7 watts, but doesn't have all the features the Blackstar has and its price is higher. The Blackstar combo (or head) is only 5 watts. Put an EQ in the loop and you can bring the overall volume down as well.
