I'm not fussed if it's rack or head based (I'll have a rack with my power conditioner, wireless & tuner in regardless), but it's got to be simple to set up, has to be mono as I've only got a mono cab and don't want to buy another, and it has to have at least a valve power section. It's also preferable to have an easy way of direct recording for late night recording after my daughter's in bed.
If I go the rack route I need to find a poweramp that's either capable of running in bridged mono mode or that is designed as a dual monoblock with both sides independently powered up (ie. Marshall 9x00, VHT 2:90:2 etc). However, I'm fussy, so any poweramp also has to meet these criteria:
- 6L6 or KT88 power (I hate EL34's)
- Min 50W, max 100W (can be 100W/side if it's dual monoblock)
- Reasonably light
- Preferably not more than 2U high
I've got a couple of ideas for setups so far:
1. Line 6 Spidervalve head (messed around with one in work briefly and it seems alright)
2. Line 6 Pod XT Pro & poweramp
3. Engl E530, my existing G Major & a poweramp
Each has pros & cons.
Pros: Sounds & fx in one; Easy to set-up & control
Cons: Non-midi, so I can't control my Whammy & rig from my FCB1010; Need to buy a Line 6 floorboard
Pros: Sounds & fx in one; Can be controlled from my existing FCB1010
Cons: Need to find a suitable poweramp
Pros: All valve; Can be controlled from my existing FCB1010 & G Major
Cons: Need to find a suitable poweramp; Need to get my G Major fixed
So, any feedback on any of these, or any suggestions? Just nothing with EL34 valves please.
