Found a surprising little gem at Denmark Street when I went in to get some cables yesterday. Picked up a little Behringer compressor pedal (basically a clone of the MXR Dynacomp) for about £20. I'd been thinking about getting a new compressor pedal since even though I didn't really get on with the Boss one I used to have, I missed having one in the arsenal for certain things. Despite the number of cheap, nasty Boss/Digitech knock-offs from Behringer, I'd seen a few clips of the Behringer one on Youtube, and it was a pretty nice, transparent sounding unit as far as I could judge from the clips I watched, so I figured I may as well give it a go, as it was cheap enough that I wouldn't be heartbroken if it didn't work out.
Anyway, the thing actually sounds really fucking good! Gives hyper-clean tones a lot more punch and sparkle, but doesn't overly colour the tone like the Boss compressor, or muddy it up like the compressor on my POD. Obviously the thing probably wouldn't be road-worthy for £20, but just for occasional use at home, it's excellent value.
I have a hand-made comp that really appeals to comp guys - it's managed to get keeley 4-knob comps off pedalboards. It was a gift to me, and it's really nice, but I never use a compressor .
