so, here we are - a few days before we are going to play two bigger/awesome gigs...and our second guitarrist brakes his leg.
we dont want to cancel the shows, but also want to deliver the most possible "wall"...and mentioned guitarist said "well, take my rig and blow them away with an awesome stereo-setup - you're a gear-nerd, you can do this!".
o.k., so i really want to do this - the problem is that i have to use whats available, we only have 2 more rehearsal days and i can also adjust the rigs in the rehearsal room. further, on saturday is a national holiday here, so no chance to buy seom extra switches or else. and here is the first problem - a "classic" bi-amping/Stereo setup is not possible, as no ABY-switch. BUT i think that my idea will work nonetheless, i will try it out this evening, but i would ask you to help me check - in theory - if i'm missing something essentially ("dude, you want to hook up X to Y? the deathstar is going to explode!") or even some minor detail (ground-hum / phase-issues / ...)...anyway, here we go:
Diezel Herbert (main amp)
Mesa Dual Rectifier ("slave" amp)
(wont mention the cabs a i have to use whatever is local backline, but it will be a cab for each head of course)
ART X-11 Midiboard (also got a Nobels MF-1 at home, but i prefer the ART)
what i want to do: hook my guitar up to the Herbert as usual, and drive the first chain dry as always:
Guitar -> TU2 -> TS808 -> ISP -> Herbert
but then i plan do do a side chain:
going from Herberts Loop Send to the Rocktron Xpression, and from the Rocktron in the Loop Return of the Mesa, so i use only the Poweramp of the Dual Recti, and can control the tone for both sides on the Herbert.
First issue: This would for sure sound amazing (already did it a few weeks ago ) - but it will only make me louder, and wont be STEREO, as it would be the same signal on both sides.
therefor, i thought it would be best to make a preset on the Xpression, with a permanent Delay on, just 1 repeat, no original signal, signal delayed for xx miliseconds. what would you think would be a good setting here? 10 ms? 20 ms?
is a DELAY the correct effect for this? or should i use a chorus and "eliminate" the dry signal on the effect? should i add a pitchshifter and detune the signal a few cent? or should i use the pitchshifter ONLY, go to 100% wet signal and "slow shifting" - so the sound is better and it IS already delayed a bit?
this is my main problem as i REALLY REALLY SUCK on adjusting effects, i'm a "dry" player mostly, just use some factory-presets for fun there and then...
after clearing this - if this works, we would have the "cornerstone" for a real stereo setup, and that what i would use for the parts when both guitars play the same.
BUT: besides completely different riffs (which i wont be able to reproduce of course haha), there i still some stuff left:
.) we have parts where A plays riff X, B is quiet, and then B plays riff X and A is quiet. this is where in "normal" setups the A/B/Y switch comes into the game - there is none available, so i thought it should work if i use on my midi board:
Preset 1: "stereo" - both signals as above
Preset 2: "Mute" preset for the Xpression, so only Herbert side plays
Preset 3: "Mute" preset for the Herbert (will use Master 2 and turn volume on that to zero, as "mute" also quitens the Loop), so only Mesa side plays.
should work i guess...will be stepdance galore deluxe, but would work.
.) the other thing is: as mentioned, forget completely different riffs, but the parts where B plays a third/fifth/octave higher than A, i should be able to get that with the pitchshifter. it will sound "plastic" as fuck, i know, but 95% of the audience wont hear the plastic, they will hear a "wall of sound" and two different tones i think...
so i could make some more presets, based on the first "stereo" preset, and pitchshift 300/500/700/1200 cents higher/lower, signal 100% wet...
as far as i can see, this should work - or am i missing something? i'm usually pretty good at this (building a theory-rig ) , but im already so stuck in my mind, i cant think clearly anymore, so any input is apprecciated!
The short and answer is yes this will work to set a delay a for the second (mesa) side but i would make it like 3-5ms and i would set a detune at no more than 7-8 cents
