So, over the last couple of days I bought a few bits of gear. I've spent around $3500 all told, and it was mostly impulse. Here's what went down.
The other day, I decide to get some tubes for my 2101, and juuust in case GC had a Roadster in stock, I took my clubs out of my car. Lo and behold they did, and the salesman that I worked with was absolutely fucking awesome - older guy, rock n' roll to the bone, made sure I played some other amps, made sure I had a new cable/footswitch from a model that wasn't on the floor, etc, etc. The guy took great care of me, and as a result instead of spending $50 on tubes I spent $2300 on the Roadster, 808 and some misc cables.
So today I go back in there and immediately look for him. He says he can't help me out, because the stuff that I want is in Pro Audio. I say that's a bummer, but he walks back, introduces me to the sales guy, etc. I have a 6 space Roadrunner rack that I paid ~$175 for there about a year ago. I don't gig. It's in 99/100 condition. The 2-space variant that I want is on sale for $70.
So I bring the empty case in, and tell the guy "Hey, I just spent $2300 here yesterday, and I'm here to pick up a case, a drum machine, an interface, a mic, and some more cables. I know that music gear depreciates, but I'd appreciate it if you don't completely lean me over on my trade in."
There are racks on the floor in way worse shape than mine, that are new but floor models that have been banged around, and they're selling them as new. I figure $80 for mine is fine, but if they absolutely have to make a profit off of me, I won't be offended at $60 because I know the drill. So it would cost me $20 extra to downgrade my 6 space to a 2-space, but that's the nature of gear trading, and I would be fine with it.
The kid comes back and says that he'll offer me $25 for my rack. I tell him that I'm a bit offended by both that absurd offer, and the fact that, hey, by the way, I'm about to spend another thousand dollars in here, on the stipulation that you don't fuck me over on my trade in.
"There's nothing I can do."
I'm not going to lie, I came into some cash lately from some overtime I've put in at work, and I'm buying some of the gear that I've been jonesing for. I had every intent of playing strats (I even sent Drew a text saying that I was going to pick one up) and Martins this morning, and it's very, very possible (you know how little willpower I have) that I would have walked out with one, or both of them, along with my recording gear.
Instead, I picked up my rack case, walked out, drove 5 miles up the road to Daddy's Junky Music and bought my pro audio stuff there. They had no high end acoustics, and only a couple of Strats, neither of which did anything for me.
So instead of GC making another $2000+ off of me today, all I did was return the TS-808, and they lost $150. As I was walking out of the store, the store manager was at the door and asked me how far off they were on my trade. I told him exactly what happened, that I had just bought the most expensive amp on their floor yesterday, and that I was here to buy a drum machine, some mics, and an interface, and oh yeah, I'm going to check out some Martins and Strats, too. The guy just shrugged it off and said "Ok, see ya", along with a reminder that they were having some 10% off sale.
I know that DJM is another music conglomerate, but the guys there (all of them) treated me like gold. They had no idea if I was going to buy some picks or spend $700 on pro audio stuff when I walked in the door, and as a customer, I felt like my dollars mattered. It's unfortunate that they don't carry Mesa stuff (and I don't want to fuck the one good GC sales guy that I worked with), otherwise I'd return the Roadster to the manager and tell him that the reason is that I'm going to buy it up the street at a store that doesn't insult their customers with ridiculous lowball offers.
I've probably spent over 10 large at that GC over the years, and for the sake of $40 on a trade-in that they'd sell for at least twice that used, I will never shop there again.
I don't know you at all, but given your willpower comment, I give it a week before you're in there again.
On the other hand, GC sucks dick and it's a man.
