So I just pulled the trigger on a Mesa Mark 5 head. And now, since I have some disposible income, it's time to upgrade my POS Carvin cab. I'm going to go with a Radial Headbone VT for switching 2 heads between 1 cab. But, as the title says, I'm torn between which cab to get. Here's my list:
Roadking 4x12: Has 2 V30's and 2 C90's, with the C90 side being half open. I've never tried this cab, but how does it sound for high gain tones? Does the low end tightness suffer due to the 3/4 design? I like the idea of having 2 different speakers, mainly because I'm upgrading my home studio and plan on doing a lot of recording. Having different speakers as well as 2 different heads gives me a lot of tone options in the mix.
Mesa Recto 4x12: I dig the huge sound from the oversized recto cabs, but the last time I used one with my TR on stage, the V30's can get farty in the low end at high volumes. Granted, I'm not playing out at the moment, but in the event I join another band, I want my cabinet to be able to handle stage volumes. A 4x12 with C90's is popular among some cats on this forum, but it seems like that's a special order thing? If this is the road I choose, how do I go about ordering one?
For what it's worth, the tone I prefer is more dark and bassy. I'm not into 'djenty' tones or midrangy/thin/cutting tones. I like my guitar to sound like a bulldozer! I.e., I run my TR w/o a tube screamer. I have KT88's in it (which are fucking gnarly BTW) and keep the bass up around 11-12:00. Super chunky and thick, but still tight enough for me. With the Mark 5 coming my way, I have a lot of experimenting ahead of me, but I figure my ear will probably lead to a darker type of tone.
So let's hear it!
