So I was at GC for a couple hours today, mostly to test a POD HD. The first thing I did was set it to manual mode, meaning the buttons turned on and off the effects, and I manually adjusted the amp models. As was previously reported, the presets by and large suck.
I went through pretty much all of the models, and while they seem to be a little more "life-like" than previous Vetta-based models, they seemed to be only a marginal improvement. Not only that, but they still don't feel very dynamic compared to playing a tube preamp/amp, and more importantly, they don't feel like a tube amp. I was hoping that at this point they would have concentrated on this a bit more.
I really don't feel so guilty owning a tube amp right now, after playing with this thing. I'm certainly not new to POD tweaking, having owned the 2.0, XT, X3, and currently POD Farm as well.
It would be definitely good enough for recording, however it's just not as fun to play as a tube amp, which for me is a big problem.
What did you try it through? Headphones? Power + cab?
I noticed my pod xt sounds a million time better when its not going through headphones.
