So, as G66 still isnt getting anywhere with fulfilling my 6monthsagoIorderedanUltrabutnowIshould receiveanAxeIIseomwhenin5000years order, I need to spend more and more money and time to keep my rig gig-able.
Recently, I was in need for an effect for some leads and tapping parts, and as it was very urgent, I just grabbed the next piece that was available, a MXR ZW38 Black Label Chorus...as my touring rig needed to be as simple as possible, it had to go in front of the amp, where its - imho, and for my needs - well, "nice", but not too useable. Nonetheless, I did a few gigs with it.
Yesterday, I finally had the time to drive to Vienna and return that little thing, and also wanted to try out the Loomis.
And when I was looking for a replacement for the ZW38, something caught my eye. Well, most of us, including me, are well aware of Line6's M9 and M13 units...what I didnt know, was, that there is also an even smaller one, the Line6 M5.
This one has almost all the effects as the bigger ones, but there is always only one effect at time useable. Besides - and this is what made me get it - the noisegate, which can be generally turned on or off.
So, long story short, as I had a 120,--credit for returning the MXR, and the Line6 M5 is 200,- - and as fate wanted it, I had 80,- bucks in my pocket:
New Pedal Day for me!
So far, this thing is AMAZING.
Of course, the "only 1 effect at time/per preset" is really limiting it on first sight, but hey, thats why its 200,- new only and actually EXACTLY what I needed.
AND: its fully midi-programmable, so if you are like me, and a "real" multieffect unit is actually overkill anyway, this is the thing you should get.
I am not through the all effectmodels and presets yet, actually I really just have started to scratch the surface - but this damn thing is much more flexible than it loks like at first! What really caught my attention: I dont know how many of you have once tried to integrate a Digitech Whammy into their signal chain, but if you did - you know what I mean, and if not, let me tell you that this is the most extreme tone sucker EVER. This made my whole rig sound like a cheap digital unit, and that was in "bypass"...
To get to the point: the "Pitch Glide" model, is the better Whammy (altough Digitech anounced to have the bypass fixed on theri new model). Seriously. You need an additional expression pedal tough, also forr the Wah models of course, OR a midifloorboard with expression pedals, like the Behringer FCB1010, which I have.
BUT: even without the expression pedal - you just can set a preset with a fixed setting of - for example - minus5 semitones...and yes, it works. Made an 8string out of my 7string with just one click haha...also no problems with chords. I will test that EXPLICIT with my full rig haha...
So, I actually was getting this thing just for fun, for toying around at home, trying some stuff out etc.etc., but I really think this is getting its fixed place on my pedalboard.
Oh hey, and I would highly recommend this unit for the djentser on budget: There is one effect, called "Boost+Compressor"...and again: the Noisegate is also always useable additionally. Do I need to say more?
So, for anyone who really only uses one-effect-at-time, ot for the folks who arent sure what they really need (if you arent satisifed with your tone/rig anymore, and you dont know what to change/add - this is for sure awesome to just try some different stuff out - hint: the EQ models are awesome!!), or ESPECCIALLY for those who have midified their rig and searching for the "extra" - this is recommended. If you need more than one effect at once, you shouldnt get it, that must be said. It IS limited.
For 200,- new (and I guess there will soon be some used ones available - just as always), and the - I really need to state that - HIGH quality of the effects, AND TRUE BYPASS (fuck you, Whammy), this is a no brainer.
This week, I'll test it with my full rig, also in a band setting - both: before the amp and in the loop, just to check if there is any tone-sucking, digital fuzzing or anything like that. On my home rig, I couldnt detect anything sucking.
I actually really want one of these. Tuner, noise gate, and a single effect. That would replace pretty much my entire bass pedalboard in one go, especially now that my amp has a bit of built-in grit.
