Just got this in the mail, an ENGL e630 preamp, predecessor to the e530 one space available today. When I bought this I was hoping it would be nastier/grainier/less smooth than the modern ENGL lineup, and it is a bit, but it might still be a bit too smooth for me, I thought that being older it would be more vintage (perhaps based off the straight?), but it has just as much gain and saturation as any of the other modern ENGLs. Great tones at any volumes too, which is one of ENGLs biggest strengths.
I can't really compare it to my e530 that well, since I am running it through a el34 amp (Rivera K-tre's power section) instead of the 6l6 Mesa 50/50 I used with my e530, but they are very similar.
Anyways I was hoping it would give me a new flavor of Death Metal nastiness to mess with to try and cop tones along these lines (not going for this tone exactly, but tones in that realm)

And heres a little sample of some Death Metal riffery I threw together in the last couple minutes for nastiness. Crooks tells me the way to go for the early 90s kind of riffs is double instead of quad tracking (this riff is quad tracked 100L - ~65L - ~65R -100R) but I'll mess with double tracking next.

Still have quite a ways to go before I start copping that Edge of Sanity type sound. I think I might need an HM-2!
