So, picked my JCA22H up from the apartment office this morning. UPS sucks on multiple levels, but what can you do?

Box looks a bit beat up...

Not good:

Fucking UPS!

The only damage to the amp was this small nick in the tolex and light depression in the shell:

Sending an email off to the seller, but going to keep it, since it's a small thing.

On to the amp:

This little beast sounds awesome! Much better for lead tones than rhythm chunk though, IMO. It plays nicely with my RP1000 as long as you don't use the amp models, so I'll have to set up a couple banks for it.

I wouldn't expect metal rhythm tones without a boost. It's not lacking in gain, but it's not the tight grinding gain we're all used to for metal. With a boost it's absolutely killer though. I bought this mostly to have a more 80s "shred/hard-rock/metal" amp, and it fits the bill perfectly.

It is fugly as hell though, that logo needs to go. I think a more script font "Jet City" logo would be better for these amps, but I don't get to pick. I'll get an open metal baffle for it, and put the badge on the inside of it, or leave it off completely.

I should be able to do a couple vid clips over the weekend, probably with a bunch of Maiden.

^ It is, I see two channels. Not sure why it doesn't actually say 22H on there

You're right.

At least, it's written on the box.

You know, I didn't even notice all the "20"s on the chassis.

It's still a 20 watt amp, after all.

It does say JCA22H where the model is listed, on the back under the speaker jacks, just can't see it from the angle I took that rear pic.

I'm now happy I have an FJA-modded JC20H, rather than a JC22H. Mine has the extra gain stage, as well as the depth mod, and with a boost, it is a lot closer to the metal grind you're looking for. It gets really saturated all by itself. Stock, the amps just don't make that much gain.

I bet you'll get plenty of grind out of a 22h with a boost.

Too much knowledge leads to confusion
Too many guitar lessons lead to jazz-fusion

The stock 20H doesn't grin up that much, even with a boost, and I assume the 22H is the same. You really need to use the gain on the pedal to get the amp to saturate. FJA got the gain out of it by adding another 12AX7 to the amp.

The 22H has a second channel that kicks in a total of 5 12AX7s (I think that includes the FX loop buffer.) I don't think you have to worry about saturation.
