I was looking at maybe getting a Vox Valvetronix VT40+ to just have a neat practice/recording amp with a lot of effects. There is also the VT20+ but it has only an 8 inch speaker and i thought that might hurt the low end alot, will the 10 inch have noticeably better low end?
Any one have any experience with these? From my understanding before they made the plus version, there was a regular valvetronix.
To do the direct recording, do i go guitar<input<output<recorder? (2 cables)

I wouldn't advise it, in my experience they break all the time. I'd suggest a Peavey Vypyr or a Fender Mustang, they sound better and are much less likely to shit the bed and I believe that you can record via USB on the Fender.
