I'm looking into getting a 2x12 cab. Looking for suggestions on certain models i should be looking for, especially on the used market. I play brutal and technical death metal. Would like to be able to get a used one for around $250-300, if i can. Don't know for sure what head i'll be running through it. Most likely some kind of older solid state i've been wanting to try , maybe a ampeg vh-140c, Crate GT 3500, Crate Excalibur, Randall of some kind.
Looking for something relatively small, so no "oversized 2x12's".
Do you want a "normal" 2x12 or a vertical 2x12? All of the "big name" brands either offer a 2x12 cab or made them recently enough that they're available on the used market if not brand new. The best bang-for-the-buck would probably be Avatar, although Carvin's prices are reasonable as tends to be typical of them. I personally own an old Peavey vertical 2x12 (for recording) and a newer Mesa vertical 2x12 (for gigging) that are very solid cabs, and have previously used the Genz-Benz G-Flex ported 2x12 for recording.
Build quality is what you should focus on, as a lot of 2x12 cabs simply aren't offered with the same speaker options as most 4x12s. That's where someone like Avatar would be worth checking out. For price alone, a used Carvin or Peavey will probably available used for dirt cheap, and you can always replace the speakers. I've seen the Randalls around, but never played through one.
