I'm looking to pick up one of these units but just can't make a decision. Maybe the reality is that I don't need either one.
Either way I'm planning to buy a power loudspeaker to run it through. To give a little background. I'm a woodshedder plain and simple. I like to record a little for myself and friends and noodle after work to unwind. I play hard rock / heavy metal / thrash and as I grew up in the '80's I like way too much gain.
I've got two friends with the Axe II's one has had a big helping of Cliff's cool aide and thinks I'm an idiot for even looking at anything else.
The other has one and thinks I'd be just as happy with an HD POD Pro or desktop.
I have the money either way so although $2200 gets my attention it is not a deal breaker. For what I'm doing is the Axe II so much better than the POD HD to make it worthwhile or do you guys think I'd be just as happy with the POD and I'd be bumming a week later that I spent the extra $1500?
The HD does a few things pretty well. The Axe II does a shitload of things very well.
If you like way too much gain, the II is the way to go. At the end of the day, the HD is still a Pod. It sounds damn good if you take the time to dial it in, but at really high gain it loses a little clarity whereas the AxeII keeps kicking ass.
I sold my Axe II for a Pod because all I use (both of them) for is recording, and for what I want the Pod does the job well enough. My "main" amp is a 6505. If you have the extra cash, and you're looking to upgrade and are only going to have one amp, the Axe is the way to go.
The Pod HD is awesome for what it is. The Axe II is another animal altogether.
