Was thinking about something as I was moving my setup around a bit. I've got a stereo cabinet which I can run either in 4 ohm or 16 ohm operation when in mono.
Does it really make a difference which one I pick?
Does the amp respond differently?

Yes, and it depends on the amp. More specifically, it depends on the output transformer. My Stiletto sounds the best pushing an 8ohm cab from the 4ohm tap. Mike's Triple Rec sounds brittle and lacking in saturation with 4ohm cabs, but loves 16ohm. Recto's don't really work well mismatched, but Stilettos and Marks love it. Marshalls only sound good at 16ohm matched. Same with Fender, only at 8ohm.
That is just my personal experience. You have to let your ears and your gut be the judge. It is nothing quantifiable to me; I just know when I've got it right.
