So I jammed my rectoverb a couple times, and had lots of time to play with all the knobs. I've gotten used to EQing the amp with my ears and not my eyes, because mesa's EQ system is fucking strange as balls. I will add in here as an aside that i haven't used it and band volume with a boost yet. It made a big difference in how much I liked the tone at bedroom volumes. Just wasn't jiving with the tone tho.
One of the days I was at the jam space rippin' it up I happened on a room of guys playin' some cool pseudo pantera stuff and the dude let me play his 5150 for a minute and it was instant gratification. Like, whatever setting he had going with and SD-1, and his single EMG charvel. Sounded phenominal. Dude made the analogy, "5150's man, they're like pizza. Even when it's bad, it's still pretty good."
Sadly it seems neither amp will do everything I want, since I like to mess around with REALLY cleany cleans and the 5150 can't do that...ever. The mesa on the other hand has beautiful sparkly cleans, just the way I like it. I just can't haven't clicked with the dirty stuff yet.
As soon as the opportunity presents itself, I will be putting my nova drive in front of the recto at band volumes and seeing how it goes. Any sugestions before I flip this bitch?
In my experience, the ROV is a great rock amp, but a mediocre at best metal amp. The 5150 is a fantastic metal amp, and a mediocre clean amp.
Have you considered something like a Mark V?
