I'm in San Antonio for a little while. Not wanting to be without my guitar, I packed my Ibanez, my 15-watt Marshall, my POD X3 Live, and my Bloody Murder. Finally having time to set up my semi-portable rig last night, I realized that even with the POD doing all the work, the Marshall makes everything sound like crap. I don't travel constantly, but I do it enough that having a small amp to bring with me is worthwhile, and this just isn't doing it. I was thinking of consolidating the whole porta-rig into one unit, so I was considering a Peavey Vypyr. The reviews and demos I've seen make them seem pretty good. They don't have any in McAllen, but up here there are two Sam Ashes and some other guitar stores that may have them.
$100 for a 15-watt Vypyr seems like just the thing to solve the problem, but I'm debating dropping another $100 for the 30-watt. It has stompbox models (the 15 doesn't), some other additional functionality, and would also be more usable for playing with other guitarists or for any other general usage. Any opinions on whether or not the added functionality and power would be worth it, or on the Vypyr in general? Is there something better around the same price range I should be looking at?
My Roland cube does a good job, but it gets a little flubby when I turn it up even a little bit.
My suggestion would be to get something with at least a 10" speaker, that should keep it from mostly sounding like a coffee can.
