    Budget bass head

Sorry if this belongs in the "other instruments" forum. My band's bassist moved to Texas a while back and a friend of ours volunteered to take his place. Trouble is he needs some equipment and is on a fairly tight budget.

I'm hoping one of you fine gentlemen have some suggestions for decent bass heads for death/black metal under $500 or so. We're looking to record soon so something that we can DI would be great, but it's gonna see live use as well.

Here's our bandcamp for an idea of our sound, if that helps.

Something reliable and powerful enough with a Sansamp or something in front of it should do the trick.

Do you need built-in distortion, or is "loud" the only requirement?

    What cab does he have?

If you have a 5150ii/6505+ at your disposal, you're good. If not, fender that shit.

Gallien Krüger GT700RB-II - I'm not sure what they cost new where you live, but if they are over 500,-, at least used they should be right in the budget. If you don't get one of those, I am pretty sure the GT-400 RB3 ("lower" powered version, 280W "only") gets the job done.

One of those, plus a Boss ODB-3, and you have a really cool setup. Our bassist has this setup, and I am really in love with his tone. Absolutely evil and crushing, for any style of extreme metal.

One more: I have no experience with it, but the latest Ampeg additions, the Protaflex PF350 is dirt cheap...goes for 300,- here.

EDIT: and yes, all those have a DI-out.

I've used some Gallien Kruger stuff from the Backline series that was pretty cheap but didn't sound bad at all. There was also plenty of power in it. I'd recommend grabbing a few fuzz and distortion pedals and trying them out to see what gives the kind of flavour he wants in a distortion. Friends of mine used a boss HM2 and it sounded really evil and plenty of people use Big muffs and similar fuzzes to get the bass into filth territory.

Every time I fart around on one of those Acoustic bass amps, they always seem like great deals for the money. My brother has one of the combos and it sounds pretty damn good.

They have a head that's cheap, but no idea how it is at volume:

In my experience the Acoustic gear is not gig-worthy. It does sound decent and has 5-band EQ, so you can sculpt a good sound. But the preamp has no headroom and drives quickly into overcompressed useless sound with a Sansamp or similar in front of it, and the construction is crap. Had major breakdowns within one year after maybe 30 rehearsals and half a dozen gigs.

I think big-name used is a better idea.
