So I'm going about doing a rig for my Peavey Ultra given that most of my rack is now gone and/or going. I've also already ordered the following two bits of kit: -
G Lab GSC-2
Guitar System Controller GSC-3/ GSC-2 | G LAB
G Lab M4L
MIDI 4 X LOOP M4L | G LAB
What this essentially means is I'll have a pedalboard with up to 10 loops available to use. One minor thing to note is that the GSC-2 has an input and ouput and loops in between, so I won't be able to include anything on this part in the effects loop if I want to use things in front of the loop too.
What this essentially then gives is 6 loops before the amp, and 4 in the loop (or the other way round). Now I have enough pedals to sort out the first 6, which are: -
- HBE Germania Treble Booster
- Foxrox Octron octavia/octaver
- Boss HM2
- Electro-Harmonix Big Muff
- Teese RMC3 Wah
- Digitech WH4 Whammy
I also have an ISP Decimator too, which I will probably use in one of the M4Ls 4 loops.
The other 3 loops though are up for negotiation. I'm thinking Delay, Reverb and Chorus, but I'm tempted by a Phaser too.
In terms of highest priority/most money to go on, it's likely to be the Delay as it's definitely my most used loop effect. Reverb I'm up in the air about as I only use it very sparingly, and I already have a Verbzilla that hasn't sold, but I'm not overly attached to the Verbzilla. Chorus is something I don't use a lot right now, but have in the past and am likely to use it more if I have quick access to it. Phaser is something nice to have but not essential.
In terms of prices I'd look to pay (new or used), delay I could go up to a maximum of £200 but it'd have to be really special. £100 is a reasonable price, anything over that and I have to be very fond of it. Reverb has a 100 absolute maximum, but £50 is more reasonable. Chorus the most I'd want to spend is £60, 40-50 being more reasonable. Phaser, I'm not sure I can fit it in the rig yet so I'll ignore price on that for now.
So my thoughts on each so far were
TC Electronic Flashback - Lacks tap tempo, but the sounds appear to be amazing. Just so happens the shop I'm going to tomorrow has one for £99 preowned, so fits the price range perfectly too.
Boss DD7 (or a DD5) - Tap tempo available, but I'm a fan of tape echo sounds as well as digital delay which this doesn't appear to do. Used they are good prices (85 to 90 for DD7, less for the DD5 after a quick search on Gumtree, possibly could be had even cheaper too)
MXR Carbon Copy - Seems a little basic, but if it does the job why argue? Have seen these go for around 70 to 80 quid
Skreddy Echo - Similar to my Octron in that it only really does one thing, but it does it in such a sublime way that I can't help but love it. It's one of them pedals that is on the "one day I'll have one" list, but I don't know if it does enough for this rig. I can't try one of these out though, and it MAY be a bit too much for just a single use delay pedal. They are £160 new, plus import tax and the like. If I could find one used I'd still expect to be paying about £120-130.
Mooer Anaecho - Cheap and saves a lot of space on the pedalboard, and I like some of the clips I've heard, but may not be very versatile and potentially not on par with anything else I've mentioned. £59 new, cheaper used
EHX Memory Toy or Boy - Both look interesting, but may not be what I'm after. Both do modulated delay which I've always liked, but it may not fit what I'm after. Around £70 for the Toy, £90-110 for the boy.
Honestly I don't know where to start with Reverb. As it's not going to be used a huge amount, looking into the more "boutique" stuff seems a bit of a waste. However if there is something for a decent price I'll consider it. Anything like the Boss RVs, Mooer, the EHX Nano Grail, but then again the Verbzilla may do the job.
I've seen a few Boss Super Choruses go quite cheap (£40-50) and some of my favourite chorus sounds use them (late 80's Ozzy with Zakk is a good example). I'm not too up on other choruses though, besides knowing things like the EHX Nano Clone exists, and Mooer probably have something too.
As I'm not sure if I can fit this in the rig yet, I wont go into too much detail. However my thoughts were instantly a Phase 90 or an EVH one, as my favourite phase sounds come from EVH anyway. However anything comparable, or anything worth looking at would be appreciated.
For each, I'm very willing to look into forgotten classics (80s/90s/2000s discontinued pedals). I own a HM2 thats as old as I am, so I'm perfectly fine with old pedals if they do something awesome.
I'm in no rush in terms of buying any of these as this is all for my B/home rig which has been working fine for a year now without any effects. However I do like to play with pedals so I'm kinda looking forward to having a proper pedalboard for the first time (each previous attempt hasn't lasted long due to my pure hatred of tap dancing).
If anyone has anything for sale that fits the bill on any of these let me know.
