Finding a set that balances even REMOTELY well is fucking impossible. And don't start talking to me about the new 'balanced tension' sets, because they're bullshit too. Yeah they're 'balanced', with each other, but then you either have to sacrifice some rigidity in the low strings, or some 'give' in the high strings, depending on which pack you get.
Hybrid sets are even fucking worse, they're a nightmare! They progressively balance well until you get to the 2nd string, which has massively higher tension than everything else, then a floppy as fuck 1st string (by comparison).
The closest thing to perfection I've found is DR Tite Fit 10-50. But they're DR, so... they're bullshit. The gauges are marvelous though - 10-13-17-28-38-50. It's like a semi-hybrid feel. You have rigidity and a bit of strength in the D-G-C strings, and then some nice loose play and bend-ability in F-A-D. But... they're DR. So they die in about 3 days. If that.
BTW, this is for D standard on a 25.5" guitar, and Eb standard on a 24.75". I want to use the same gauges for both, as it'll work out roughly the same, but finding the right set is just horseshit.
And buying singles is a fucking nightmare too, because you start off with one brand, adding single strings to your basket, then you'll hit a gauge that that brand doesn't even make, so you have to either switch to a brand you don't like/know/trust, or pick a similar gauge, but then that throws all your balance out the fucking window
yeah i find this too - you can usually sort it by buying 1 extra string and substituting as i find, like you say, that there is usually just 1 string which is totally out of whack with the rest of them
