Since I've been delving into the world of bass more lately, I've been thinking about better ways to get some tones out of my 8100 and 5150ii for the bass. They sound alright, but are really flabby and don't hold up too well for recording bass, so I started looking at preamps.
So far, I've found the Tech 21 VT bass pedal interesting. Very ampeg, flexible and grindy.

I like punch and grind. And affordability, i pretty much as a rule don't spend more than 160 on pedals. I'm thinking about things I could plug into the poweramp of my 5150ii and then use as my main tone circuit instead of the green channel, which flubs out sometimes, since it's meant for guitar.
I'd love to hear you guys opinions, especially anyone with preamp experience, or even tips on ways to get good bass tones without spending cash and using what I have.
I'd pick up a used sansamp rack unit. Lots of tonal options. I've never used a bass thru a 5150 so I can't comment there. I've gotten ok distorted bass tones out of a JCM800 but it wasn't exactly great. Basses just generally push them too much and you get a very saturated low end.
