I'm trying to get an idea for what multieffects units there are out there that are similar in form factor to the HD500.
I'm currently going through a bit of a effects-life crisis with my B rig, in that I have a full pedalboard of effects, but the "workflow" just is not working for me. I spend so much time dicking about with getting levels right, cables, impedance mismatching, and having a huge pedalboard taking up space when I don't feel that inspired by it. Plus, it's too big/heavy to use live (or at least it is for my preferences and venues I play).
There are some amazing sounds I can get out of it, but all I end up using is my rhythm tone with a noise gate most of the time, leads with a bit of delay, and an ethereal sounding clean. The other sounds, while they have their uses, are just either hard to work in with the other sounds, don't work quite as well, have their own issues etc.
Compare this to my A rig (Invader and HD500), which I love to pieces and every gig/rehearsal is a breeze with this thing.
If the B rig was meant only ever for home use, this wouldn't be much of an issue, but I'm in a second band which could do with not having the current A rig in terms of sound. I know, first world problems and all that, but if I can then I shall!
So besides the likely upcoming for sale threads, I need to work out what I want to change to.
Now on to the actual point, in terms of whats out there, I obviously know about the HD500 (and love it) but I'd like to see if there is anything comparable in features that is the same form factor. So far the list I've seen goes: -
- TC Electronic Nova System - No 4CM so useless to me
- Digitech RP1000 - No MIDI so useless to me
- Zoom G5 - Same as the Digitech
- Boss GT100 - Looks a bit ropey, but could be okay
- TC Electronic G System - Costs far too much, and TCs effects are far too generic in my opinion for this kind of money
- Fender Floor Mustang - No pitch effects from what I can see
What I'm after is MIDI output (for amp control), 4CM, intelligent harmonizer, and if possible some character to the delays, reverbs, modulation etc. So far everything is pushing me to just using the HD500 with both rigs, but I would kind of like to have some separation between the two, and not be reliant on one piece of gear in both rigs (standard network engineer mentality I guess...)
Is there anything out there which I haven't mentioned that could do the job?
