Been using JazzIIIs for years. I use a razor blade to "checker" both sides of them for an improved grip. But I got to thinking the other day... is it the best? I picked up some Dunlop Short Stubbies and tried them before, okay, but a bit noisy. Anyone tried the V-picks? They look slippery, but the company claims they have a special surface which makes them pretty sure-gripped. They're a bit pricey. If you liked them, which model is best for DM?
V-Picks Guitar Picks, Guitar Pick
To be honest, theres no such thing as "best" as many people play very differently. I know of death metal players that use picks under 1mm, standard dunlop ones. I use 1.92mm Claytons, and the other guitarist in my band uses all sorts (he's used massive V Picks ones before, can't remember which he's using as his main now)
I personally gravitated towards the Claytons because I love the attack I get out of them, they are a fair size (the big triangle ones), and as a bonus because all three corners are the same, I get three times the life out of a pick than those which are more of a teardrop shape. However the reason i tried them was because my playing style isn't a million miles away from Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth, and those are the brand of picks he uses. Ant (BlankPlank) on here uses much thinner picks than me, and much thinner strings, and has a different playing style to me.
So essentially, best is the wrong word. I've been through more different phases with picks than most people have hot dinners, from Jazz IIIs, to big Jazz IIIs, Jazztones, Stubbys, Dunlop Tortex, I'm only just about settled on what I use now.
