So in a previous thread, I was looking to get new tubes, since I suspected the 12AX7 leading to the effects loop on my DC was shitting out. Turns out it wasn't that at all; the batteries were just dying in my pedal.
So to retest, the only thing I have that eliminates batteries and is AC powered is my old BBE Sonic Maximizer from like 1993 that hasn't been used since I discovered amps that don't suck.
So I ran it through, and sure enough the loop is perfectly fine, as is the tube. Actually, the amp sounds great with something in the loop.
Here's the kicker: at somewhat low (ie not even half way up on each dial) the BBE sounds awesome in the loop of the DC5.
The gain channel was punchier, and the clean channel sounded way fatter.
I'm thinking this is typical "guy playing guitar by himself" thought process, and it wouldn't sound as good in a mix, but damn, on it's own it sounded pretty cool.
Am I nuts? Eh, most likely.
I used an exciter in my rig for years.... It is definitely good for bedroom sounds, but not so good in a mix.
