I had my mind set on a new Laney IRT Studio. The main reason is because it is capable of low volume (1watt) metal, and can be gigged with it's 15watt capability. Also, it has the DI and a USB for connecting to a PA or direct recording. It just has so many things going for it.
However, I'm seriously thinking about saying "Fuck It!" and buying either a Randall RD20 or RD45. The RDs at least have an XLR out, so I could still record through my Presonus USB interface. I just don't know how low I can get the volume on one of these guys without really taking a tone hit. But then again, the RDs are sexy as hell!
I have not heard anything concerning the IRT series having any major issues, but I have heard the Rds have had problems with cutting out at high - full volume. Whichever I choose, I want the amp to last and not fart out on me.
What do you guys think about the comparison of the two in terms of quality and overall tone?
I love my IRT Studio to death personally. I haven't heard of anyone having problems with theirs either tbh.
I haven't owned or even had any face to face time with anything from the RD series. The cutting out at high volume would be a bit of an issue with me, too.
I guess I'd say that if you're buying new and really want to try an RD, just get it from someone with a good return policy and try it out. If it shits out on you or you feel like the IRT would better suit your needs then swap it out. If you're buying used flip a coin I guess.
