Padded straps hurt my ass much less.
    Or is somewhere else hurting?

Serious side though, my Mono Black Betty strap is the beat thing I've bought.

    Start to get sore where?

I tend to favour 3" wide grippy leather or suede straps. The wider strap spreads the load over a wider area of the shoulder, and the grippy leather stops it from sliding around so I can relax.

I tend to use the standard DiMarzio ClipLocks, mainly because they're slippy, and I tend to move a lot on stage For my bass, though, I have a wider Planet Waves strap of some kind that really helps with the weight.

Depends on the guitar, cliplocks or something leather. Not every guitar can pull off a cliplock.

The Planet Waves 3" (3.5"?) ones are obscenely comfortable, I have two laying around with Schallers, but they look pretty boring.

The Levy's M4 is probably the best cheap understated leather strap unless you want to pony up serious cash for something bitching/embossed.
