I know I had seen this talked about somewhere, like in one of my threads, but can't remember where it was, anyways, I'm looking into hopefully getting an amp with my taxes. I was dead set on the Iron heart 120 head, it has a varipower thing that drops it down all the way to 1 watt from 120. But if I'm going to be using it as a bedroom amp til I find people to jam with would it be better to just get the 60 watt version? Which besides being a 60 watt and having two less 6L6 tubes is basically the same amp and save a $150?
Also how much wattage would you really need with a tube head to be heard in a band setting? I thought Shannon may have said he used a 18 watt at a show but can't remember if it was 18 or if it was a 36 watt.

Power is rated logarithmically. Ie 100w is twice 10w is twice 1w is twice 0.1w. Higher waytage typically means more volume before power amp distortion which isn't overly ideal for tight high gain stuff.
I've used a 5w amp into a 412 and gotten through a band practice as the speakers contribute hugely to volume also. My greenback can requires more knob rotation to math the volume of my v30 cab.
That's why when you hit 'half power' on most amps the volume doesn't drop too much.
