So, I've gradually been realizing I like the tone I get out of my Roadster with the gain lower - noon, 1 o'clock or so - but at the same time, it's fairly uncompressed there, which works very well for some things, not so well at all for others - the attack gets VERY prominent, for one, and it's completely unforgiving to your legato or pick attack in terms of evenness.
For kicks, last night I fired up my Tube Screamer to see how that would change things.
I'm not 100% there yet, but it absolutely smooths out the response a little bit, without significantly impacting the tone. I kind of dig it for some things. Pinch harmonics are easier too, without the amp SOUNDING more saturated.
My TS9 is a little finnicky right now, so I may find myself needing two OD's - one to add gain to a clean amp, for blues jams, and one as a boost.
I generally dislike boosts but I do have an old 80s Japanese Boss SD-1 that's fun to bust out once and a while. I never take it anywhere since it can be kind of finicky.
