I know the question of amps has been discussed on this forum many times. I've looked and the general consensus is: Just by the 5150 / 6505.
In May, or shortly thereafter, I'm going to pull the trigger on an amp head - likely a mini head.
Current choices seem to be:
Peavey 6505 MH -
I like this amp not only because it is the vaunted 6505 but because it allows you to vary the output from 20w to 5w to 1w. In my home, I'd love to be able to get the "cranked" sound without shattering drywall. Of course, I could always buy a 1w amp but I'd like to be able to play 20W through a 4x12 eventually (perhaps somewhere other than my office.)
My concern is that this amp might be a one trick pony. While I want the brutal thundergod, I also want to be able to play southern rock and punk. I need versatility.
Jet City JCA22H
Again, a 20W amp and I read great things about it. As I understand it, here's my versatility. This amp can do a lot, yes? Downside is, you can't change the output. You can only turn it down.
The price is right, though. $279 at Musicians Friend. That's a steal.
I know you can find a 6505 head used right now for $500 give or take. I think it's more head than I need. And I really don't want to go Orange Dark Terror because I've heard it's definitely limited in what it can do.
Versatility, durability, tone... that's what I'm looking for. And $500 is probably the range I'll be looking in.
Suggestions on other amps that might meet my needs? Thoughts on the choices I've outlined? Am I mistaken about the range and versatility of the 6505? I would appreciate any thoughts on the matter.
This is not something I'm going to do this month, so whenever you get around to opinions that's great.
I never tried a mini rectifier but that would be something I'd also look at I know the big ones can do every thing very well.
