I'm crazy about Ratt/Warren DeMartini's tone, and that's what I want. I basically want the guitar tone from Detonator, but anything from Invasion of Your Privacy onward sounds excellent.
Right now I have the Randall RM100 MTS with just an Ultra module. It's being boosted by an Ibanez TS5. I also have an EHX Cathedral, and I think I'm going to keep that as a permanent fixture since reverb plays a decent part in 1980's hair metal tones. I'm using an NS-2 which has served me really well, so that'll probably stay. I would hardly think that an NS-2 would stop you from getting a Ratt tone. Like, if you chucked it in Warren's mix, it isn't going to make his signal sound like Cream
My cabinet is a Rivera Knucklehead with V30's - can't really go wrong there. I'll probably hang on to it because they're hard to come by and they're good cabinets.
Here's the burning question:
Do I swap the Ultra module in my RM100 with the Plexi module? I know there's a JCM800-type module, but I can't remember its name. The Ultra is basically a 5150, but, as I understand it, Warren DeMartini was using JCM800's - is that correct? Can I get a 'Rattier' tone with the Ultra? Right now I feel like it's too modern. It's far better suited to stuff like Arch Enemy and Trivium, but I've lost interest in playing that stuff.
With regard to guitars and pickups:
My RG2820 would be fine, although I'm definitely going to start using the JB-'59 combo. I think if I'm using an H/H guitar I'll wire the '59 so that the 5th position is the '59 with the coil split (what's the best way of making a humbucker sound like a single? ) I have way too many questions.
I'm dying to try the Marshall JCM800 reissue, but it's like $4,000 dollars here, and not much cheaper from US sellers on eBay, but I think it would be ideal for a Ratt tone
I know almost all of you guys are grumpy old Ratt fans, so gimme some advice
If you're only running one module in it, why not add a second rather than replacing? That way you have both for when you want them
