What tube poweramps pair well with an axefx that won't destroy my wallet? Budget $600~.
Also has to be able to run both mine, and my guitarist's input, comfortably. the Matrix sounds good, but I'm curious to experiment with something else, preferably in the Mesa family.
I use a Simul 2:90 and it's brilliant. Big, clean and potent which would be what you'd want for an AXFX. Used to own Marshall power amps (an EL34 100/100 and an older 9005 that was also EL34) but they Arent as clean as the Mesas, they like to compress and break up in true Marshall fashion whih probably wouldn't be ideal for your needs.
Bear in mind though I also run various tube pres through them all so slightly different use to yours.
I know the Carvin TS100s are well thought of, as are the Peavey Classic ones. Never tried either though so I can't qualify that, just a couple to look into if you can find them for a decent price I guess.
I really dig my Carvin TS100. Very neutral sounding. I keep the presence knob all the off. It sounds really good when you can open it up to about 2:30 on the volume knobs and get the tubes cooking.
If you happen go with a peavey stay away from the ones that dont have a presence/resonance control. They sound ok but not near as good as the ones with it. A couple models have it a couple dont. Cant ever go wrong with a mesa 50/50 or 90/90
Any Mesa poweramp sounds phenomenal. I spent years running rack rigs with a 50/50, 2:90 & 2:100. If you're concerned about weight, try to snag a Mesa 20/20. My buddy runs one with an Axe-Fx. Excellent sounding rig.
Thing is, my drummer is crazy loud so more headroom is always nice, though I know it's not always necessary.
