So I'm currently living/working overseas in Kuwait ("home" is east coast USA). I've been over in this region for the past 3 years and I've finally gotten to a spot where I've moved my wife over with me and we're settled in to officially make this a long-term deal. Through this time, I've been running a podHD through a set of studio monitors for all my playing needs. I'm sure enough of you know this is a feasible approach, though while not the worst thing in the world, its not exactly the most enjoyable thing either.
I'm on vacation right now and I have my Vader 2x12 pulled out of storage. Every time I do this I'm reminded how much more I love playing guitar just for the joy of it when I can play through a cab. With the monitor setup, it more often than not feels like forcing myself to pick it up once in a while to stay reasonably sharp on technique and try to push through some writing/recording. With a cab (even running through a podXT or an iPad) I've been playing for an hour or more every day just for the sheer joy of it.
I also have a 1x12 that I'm pretty sure was an old combo amp of some sort that is now just an open back cab (of pretty low quality and probably needing a new speaker, has a jet-city something-or-other in there)
So...I have four options:
A) Suck it up and deal with it
B) Ship the Vader, deal with the cost and risk
C) Ship the 1x12, cheaper and I don't care at all if it gets mangled on the way AND I don't care at all if I never ship it back whenever this is over
D) Try and buy a cab over there (used market is non-existant, so it would be new or shipped used. Most expensive, least realistic option, would probably result in option A)
It should be noted, I live in an apartment with upstairs and downstairs neighbors. Noise isn't too much of an issue, I run a 7.1 surround system and I can rock that thing pretty loud with zero complaint. My downstairs neighbor sometimes throws parties that I'm pretty sure my upstairs neighbor can hear. I could probably throw a party of my own when he does and have no need to provide my own music
So what would you guys do? Ship your prized 2x12 thats no longer in production? I know its just a Vader, but I love this thing...named my cat after it It would ship UPS to my APO address. Be in transit for probably 7-10 days. Mail usually arrives with minimal damage, so I think if its packed appropriately I wouldn't need to worry much about it. I've shipped guitars through the same service and had zero issue.
I'm figuring it would cost 1-200$ to get the materials and ship the 2x12, maybe half that for the smaller cab, although I would probably also have the cost of a new speaker...still need to pull that out of storage and see how it sounds. That one also doesn't have a grill so there's more chance of damage when its just sitting in my apartment VS the vader which is pretty much indestructible.
I can't decide and I have about one week left here to make up my mind and take action.
Ship it. It'll be fine. You won't regret it.
