I know you guys would rather read reviews than be asked stupid questions but since I have little time to spend going to stores to try different pedals:
What's a good chorus pedal to use with ultragain (to fatten up harmonics per example)?
If you have no idea what I'm talking about, listen to the song Davidian by Machine Head and check out the harmonics in the intro. It's possible to obtain than sort of overpowering harmonics with a Chorus, except I used a rack unit for that in the past.
Now I need a pedal that will give me that deep chorus with zero speed, sort of like a unilateral modulation.
Preferably no tone sucking when off?
I tried to setup my chorus to sound like that song.
The two chorus pedals I tried are the mxr black label chorus and an mxr analog chorus.
I think the black label chorus has a slight edge over the (blue) analog chorus in bringing out the harmonics.
I did notice that it worked best with the rate maxed out and the depth backed off or vice versa. And not much of a difference between the two settings.
They both seemed pretty bright though. Not sure if it's because of my tuning. But neither had that low harmonic sound like the song you posted. Both pedals added a lot to the harmonics. I think that if my tuning was lower it would give you the sound you're after.
I have never noticed any tone sucking from either pedals.
I am far from an expert on anything though.
I am also a big mxr fan. So I'm a bit biased. I haven't tried any other chorus pedals.
