So I finally got around to putting a JB that I've had sitting around for ages in my ESP "The Mirage." Love the sound, and now it's time to get some real "single-coil-sounding" single-coils in the neck and middle, as right now there are a pair of stacked humbuckers in there that do not do the Strat thing very well at all.
I've narrowed it to the SSL-4s (Quarter Pounders, although I'm not sure about whether to get 'flat' or 'staggered') or SSL-5s. The Quarter Pounders look an awful lot like what is in there already and are what I am leaning towards, but I'm a little concerned that they may be more "P90" than "Strat."
I like the volume drop from bridge to neck and neck/middle for an easy switch to clean sounds, but I like *some* punch so I don't want to go 'true vintage' output levels. I'm looking for an SRV/Jimi-style Strat sound, lots of punch and clang, and a good clean "polite" Strat sound with the volume down.
Oh, and they have to be black
I have a Quarter Pounder in the middle position on my Soloist, and it has a nice strat-like sound. Not P-90ish at all. Might be a bit too hot for what you want, though. I have the one in my guitar screwed down almost flush with the body.
