    Wound 3rd string?

So I've been trying to find a gauge of strings I like for C standard tuning on my ZW LP for the Dethklok tribute band. I had 10-52 GHSs, but I thought the 10s were too light. I found 11-53 GHSs, but thought the 53 was too thick. So I found 11-52 Dean Markleys and so far so good... but here's the thing.

They came with a plain .018 and a wound .020. I figured WTF and tried the .020, figuring if I didn't like it, I can always go back to the .018.

Anyone else here have experience with a wound 3rd? How do you like it?

I don't like it. Too round of a tone.

I never got into a wound 3rd string as well. A friend of mine likes them though. I'm just so accustomed to the feel and sound of an unwound 3rd string.

I'd like to hear more of this Dethklok tribute band though.

Not a huge fan, but if I'm playing that low I'm usually just pulling rhythm duties so I can deal with it. I run 12-52 Elixirs in Drop C with a wound .22 as the G string.

It's probably fine for rhythm, but if you're playing a lot of leads, a wound G feels WAY different when you bend it than an unwound.

If you play a chord with it, it won't sound as bell-like. But then, if you're playing Dethklok, I don't think sounding bell-like is on your list of priorities
