Medium jumbo vs. Jumbo, specifically what Carvin offers, if that helps. All of my current guitars (all 6 string) have medium jumbo. What, if any benefit is there to going to jumbo on a 7? Is it strictly feel, or is there less fret buzz with the bigger frets? Just curious, as I wasn't thinking of it until now. I ordered the Carvin yesterday with medium jumbo stainless, but I can probably change it quickly if there's an overwhelming benefit to jumbo. |

I like medium jumbo frets. I find that really huge frets feel awkward and clumsy, but it's all about personal preference. Last edited by caughtinamosh; 02-07-2010 at 03:51 PM.. |

I'm sticking with the medium jumbo stainless then, as I do quite like them on my JS. I like feeling the fretboard, I'm just used to it after all these years. |

I believe it comes down to the contact between your fingertips and the fretboard. With really tall frets you barely touch the fretboard. However, the downside is that you have to be very careful with the pressure you apply to fret notes.

I enjoy the almost scallopped feel of massive frets. Bends are easier and the strings feel 'slippier' as there is less finger rubbing against the fretboard for resistance. That said, i prefer my frets taller, not wider.

...though, you pay a slight price when it comes time to start sliding around the board. I generally prefer taller, too, but I definitely feel more at home doing slidey shit on my UV.

The levelness of the frets relative to each other determines whether or not the instrument will buzz. Fret size is mainly about feel, although if you have a wide fret that's poorly finished it can affect the intonation.

Having gotten used to the medium frets on the JS, it's probably best I stick with that. I was looking at my RG last night and realized it actually has jumbos, which may be why I prefer both the JS and SC. |

I personally prefer Carvins medium-jumbo.
Here's a couple of quick pics that'll hopefully give you a sense for their sizes (despite the poor quality of the photos). Medium Stainless - Jumbo Stainless - |
