NGD x 2: a tale of cheap PRS's

So my Mushok and Korina came in, and I picked them up yesterday. Also had a little bit of playing time, albeit through POD Farm, not my DC yet









Both guitars are quite well made, I'm impressed with the build. No glaring problems. The Mushok has a little tiny paint flaw near the joint that you really have to look for, otherwise it's perfect.

Sound-wise, the Korina isn't surprising to me, since I already had played one quite a bit. Airy, warm, punchy, clear. Excellent sounding guitar. I've got it set up with 11-52's tuned D to D, and it's a fantastic sounding rock guitar with cleans, low gain and high gain tones. I really like this guitar.

The Mushok is just flat out a blast. It comes tuned B to B, with 14-68 baritone strings, I'm guessing D'Addario. I thought I was going to swap the strings immediately for something thinner, as that gauge sounds daunting at first. But on the longer scale, it feels really good. String bending isn't too bad at all. Sound-wise, it's amazing. More clarity than I've experienced ever in this tuning range, and while the gain tones are awesome, what really is cool are the clean tones, which sound very clear and piano-like. I know the latter is a bit of a cliche with longer scales, but it's definitely true.

I think I've found my home in terms of low tunings, and that would be 6-string baritones. My 7-string ship has finally sailed now that I've got a baritone sixer, because for my limited skills and pea-sized brain, it's easier to just play the same way I do on a regular 6, just lower.

Nice! I really want one of those Mushoks. My current band tunes to drop-Bb, and having my KxK tuned like a six-string with an extra high-string just feels like a waste of an incredible seven-string (I'm too damn lazy to retune it all the time). It would also be a bit easier to play some of the stuff on a six. Oh, and longer scale-lengths really do sound awesome.

I don't know what the scale length is, but that's my preferred gauge for B standard on a 7-string.

The tension doesn't feel as tight as you'd think, for some reason. I dunno, I really like it. I don't think I'd go thicker, but this is quite nice where it's at. I have found the scale has fucked me up a couple times, not because the stretch is too far, but because of muscle memory on 25"-25.5" scales.

I use 56 for my low B string, so 68 is GODDAMN TIGHT for me

I think it has to do with the string length. The strings on my 1527 feel stiffer than on my 27" KxK, although there's obviously more tension on the KxK. There's also a noticeable difference between having the nut on the 1527 locked or open.

Yeah, look at a bass. There's far more tension on the strings on a bass than on a guitar, but you can bend like crazy no problem.
