Sounds good. I got it because I heard thats what arsis used on the early albums. And I didn't want to play the "spend $500 finding the perfect BKP for my guitar!" game (again ).
Dude, it'll be fine. I'm assuming you approximately knew what you were getting into with an EMG-81. Poplar basically is the same as alder for tonal properties, so imagine an EMG-81 in a Jackson or a Strat and there you go. It will sound better though, as the X-series has increased dynamics over the original design, so it will have Blackout-like cleans and a bit more openness in the tones. This is a good thing. Sort of like a built-in 18V mod.
I'm still mainly a passives man but I figured I'd give them a try. Who knows? I might end up really loving them.
The tone I'm looking for is kind of like Vogg's on The Negation album, and he uses 81s. The rest of my rig is Rivera K Tre ->Mesa Recto Cab, Mike Keneally uses a very similar setup when he plays live with Dethklok and it sounds awesome.
I've never played an 81X, but my LTD JH-600 turned into a tone machine when I replaced the stock 81 with a Blackout neck version. The nice thing is that they are a direct plug-in swap, so if you don't like the EMG, that's what I recommend.
If you don't like the 81x and Want the Neck blackout, shoot me a PM. I'm looking for a new neck pickup for my ESP. Funny, that... I think the Neck blackout sounds great in the bridge, but I hate it in the neck.
