It's a little known fact that Drew isn't the only one that does my setups, there's also a local guy in my town that's a little pricey but does a friggin' fantastic job. It's dark in my house as usual so pardon the shitty pics.
First up is the RG550 that I got from Josh. When I picked it up, it was blocked off and tuned to B. My guy (Alex) did a full recondition on the frets (file and polish) and scrub-a-dubbed the maple board. It's not perfect since this board is about as bad as my old 550 was that Mike refinished, but it is a SHITLOAD better and the frets are fucking fantastic now. It needed a huge truss adjustment and the nut was stripped out on it, so it also got a new truss-adjuster-nut-thing (wtf is it called, anyway?). It seemed pretty happy with big strings on it, so it's now strung 11-52 in Drop C with 5 springs in the back. These are the best friggin' trems ever, and this fucker can flutter like a motherfucker now. It also got all new pots, switches and a new output jack.
I still haven't decided on pickups for it yet and I wanted to get it in proper playing shape before I did. Right now I'm leaning towards a set of Breeds since I have a bunch of other basswood Ibby 6's with a variety of pickups in them and I want this guy to sound unique. To be honest though, it sounds pretty massive as it is, and I really can't wait to hear it with some proper pickups.
Speaking of unique... Here comes the shocker.
Next up is my C7, which I _think_ is either Ash or Mahogany, but I can't recall which. This is really a nice guitar, and now that I think of it, I bought this off of Josh as well ages and ages ago. It's always had two flaws-
1. It's headstock looks like a penis.
2. Those bloody awful duncan designed pickups that actually make the shitty "Designed by EMG" pickups sound good.
I can only rectify one of the above without either a new neck or a dremel, and since I don't really want to carve it up.. BEHOLD, THE BLAZES OF SHOCK AND AWE.
Clearly, having the exact same pickups in every one of my sevens throws my whole "unique" thing I was saying out the window, but I do have D-Activators in the 1527 that I got from Drew so for the moment I'm not a complete hypocrite.
I almost sold this once and now I'm really glad I didn't. It plays almost exactly like a 207 and the neck profile is so damn comfy. The guitar feels smaller than an Ibby and the important thing - man, does it sound fucking great with the Blazes in it.
This guy also got a fret dressing, all new pots/switches/jack and a neck adjustment. It plays like a dream now, sounds SO much more alive with proper pickups and yeah, still has the penis headstock but all in all I'm super-duper happy with it. Strung 10-60 down a half step.
The best part of both: The guy cleaned and oiled the hell out of them, so right now they're all sorts of shiny.
The C7's done but the 550 has a trip down to Mike Sherman sometime in it's future, as soon as I can convince Mike, get him drunk enough, or afford enough strippers to have him squeeze in another epic 550 restoraton for me.
oh that RG fretboard just looks loved, Chris!
i bought a blaze 7 for my blackjack that never went in, sold it to someone else. you diggin' those blazes? the guitar should be mahogany btw.
looks good! i restrung the LP and cleaned up and oiled the fretboard today
on the acoustic right now, and wishing i had a shop so i could baby it - my strings have green on them..
