I'm in the market for a 5-string J-bass to use as a studio bass. Not looking to spend a huge amount of money here, something like the Mexican Fender Jazz Deluxe V would be around the upper limit (they're around £700 in the UK, no idea how much they cost you Americans). I don't mind going second-hand, and I also should point out that whatever it is, it has to have regular J-bass pickups so I can drop in a set of BKPs (doesn't matter if it's active or not).
Top contender at the moment are the aforementioned Mexican Deluxe V, though I'm also not averse to picking up a cheapo Squier and modding it with an improved bridge and tuners if it's a solid bass to begin with (I've played some Squier guitars that have been real gems so I'm assuming the same can be said for some of their basses).
Any suggestions/recommendations/help would be awesome!
I got a Cort b5 a while ago and for the money it's so good. Handles low end amazingly all over the fretboard and it's about half the price of the MFJDV but it might be a bit different to what you're after. The guy I bought it from got a Warwick endorsement shortly after so it was hardly touched but he vouched for it too.
