I've been trying to figure this out for a while now. It makes no sense, and it REALLY bugs me, especially seeing how the loomis cost a lot more than the Arc.
If I had to compare both guitars in terms of sound, I'd say the Arc is ballsy, kind of scooped but full. Its also snappy, but not in a tin can way.
In comparison I would say the loomis sounds kind of tin can like, has mids but they're all in the wrong places. Its not very punchy, almost flat and sterile. Basically it sounds mediocre.
Hopefully you guys will be able to give some insight as I'm still a newbie and have nowhere near as much experience as most of you.
It's definitely nothing to do with how each guitar is set up or strung as I've played on the loomis for much longer, have had it setup professionally multiple times, tried with a ton of different gauges etc and its always been taken care of really well. I also tried changing the batteries...no luck.
On the other hand, the ARC was my first 'real' guitar and as such receive a lot of abuse. The neck was cracked before, but I had it repaired. It was thrown into random tunings on whim with no attention paid to intonation, tension and no truss rod adjustments were made to compensate for anything, ever
For a while I suspected that it might be something to do with how each instrument was tuned. So I tuned them both to B standard...but the Arc still shat all over the Loomis.
Now I suspect its either:
a) EMG's really fucking suck, like worse than ibanez stock pickups?
b) Guitars with trems sound worse than guitars without?
c) Ash sucks?
d) Maple necks suck?
e) Low output pickups + more gain from the amp sounds better than high output pickups and less gain from the amp?
But, I don't really own enough guitars to say which it really is.
