I put 10s on my Strat this afternoon.
I've used 11s on my 6s and 10s on my 7s for years now, but finally I just had to bite the bullet and drop down a gauge. Two reasons - one, I'm working way more, so my guitar practice has basically been "15-30 minutes tops a couple weeknights a week, and then several hours a day Saturday and Sunday," and on top of that I've been playing my Strat probably 75%+ of the time lately. Between the two, I was just brutalizing my fingertips on the weekends. I'm a blues guy at heart, so I'm constantly doing step, step-and-a-half bends, and 11s in E standard are almost SRV levels of tension (12s-13s in Eb).
Thankfully, while I haven't played them that much yet, I'm digging the tone so far - there's a bit more of an attack, and they're a little brighter. And, with the Heavy Blues set being a fairly dark, high output singlecoil, and with the Roadster being fairly dark with oodles of gain on tap, having enough body or sustain is the last of my problems. The added brightness actually seems to help a bit, all in all.
I feel like I'm cheating, a little, but I think ultimately this will be better for me, and will help me make the most of what time I DO still have to play.
(now, to order Elixir 10-52s so I don't feel TOO much like a wuss. )
So, will this new change allow you to finish your album?
