Ok, so I grabbed Jason's Charvel:
Excuse the shitty iPhone pic, I'll take more once I've set her up with non-wussy strings.
In short, I dig this guitar - it's the exact same neck profile as my strat, but H-H and with a non-recessed Floyd. I'm not 100% sold on the '59-JB combo, the neck is decent but I'd like something a bit brighter and the JB I dug until I started A/Bing it against my strat's AT-1, which by comparison is a little smoother in the highs and has slightly less, more balanced bass. But, the guitar plays great, and feels immediately comfortable.
However, I have a bunch of questions, as it seems a former owner (maybe Jason, but probably not) did a bit of tweaking.
First, the link he posted specifies black hardware and a "Floyd Rose" bridge, while this has chrome and what's clearly an Original Floyd Rose. Did these ever come with a different color hardware, or is this an aftermarket mod?
Second, I'm about 99/9% sure that a former owner sanded off a light matte finish on the back of the neck and on the fretboard. It's comfortable, and I can already see the wood discoloring a little from playing (and I dig the look of a well-worn maple board) but I'm concerned completely unfinished maple may wear faster. So, if I tung oil the back of the neck and the fretboard, will it still get that cool "worn" discolored look with time? Also, do I have to worry about getting tung oil on the frets?
Third, other than country of origin, what's the difference between the USA Charvel San Dimas and So Cal models, and the Japanese ones?
Fourth, if I don't keep the stock pickups, what else should I try?
If you want a better and brighter 59, get a jazz.
